San Pedro La Laguna, Lago Atitlan
In San Pedro we worked with the organization Vivamos Mejor ("Let's live better"), but due to internal disagreements (we don't really know who or where) the cooperation became some what handicapped and we were mostly left on our own. During the week we were supposed to have worked with the topic of "Sustainable Tourism", but instead we talked a great deal about the environment and worked one day in the National Park near San Pedro. Furthermore we helped the local museum in San Pedro translate some information from Spanish to English and clean up the building. In fear of dying of boredom we arranged a lot of games and activities our selves, including discussions especially about religion. It is incredible how much religion means in terms of development of a people - in most cases religion holds back possible development. To most Danes, Europeans or other western citizens, it is unbeliveable that people would rather starve than go against the church, and sometimes the church has unreasonable demands.
Lago Atitlán is a very beautiful lake and the view always seem to be dramatical with the many vulcanos surrounding it. We took a boat to a lovely beach and for two of the particiapants on the brigade it was the first time on the waters, so we enjoyed seeing them crawl around on the roof of the boat!
During this week we had to wash our clothing in the lake. The locals bath, wash and throw their trash in the lake. I always wondered how people could be so careless about the environment until I realizes that no matter where they put their trash it always ends up in the streets or in the country somewhere, because sadly they have no trash system.
We spent a day doing some ecological work. We replanted pine trees in little bags etc. It was really nice to do some practical work and the local workers were so nice and made it a fun day.
We had many discussions og played many games to get to know each other better, push limits and to better understand each others cultures. It was very exciting, but at times also tiring.
During this week we also made banners for the demonstration against Bush's visit in Guatemala. It reads: "The terrorist is he who robs our ressouces and militarizes our cities! Out of Latin America with Bush and his murderous military." It's a drawing of Bush as Dracula sitting on a tank shooting dollar signs, while he is eating parts of Latin America. Very colorful, right?!
