La Musica Cubana
Cuban music is in a class for itself. Some artists are famous, some aren't. Those singing about the real situation in Cuba, are not permitted to perform in Cuba and also has great difficulties signing contracts with the national record company, Egrem.
Here's a couple of good Cuban names:
Polo Montañez - Polo was from the country and the first "farmer" to become recognized for his music. Polo died in a car accident in 2003 and only became famous after his death. Rumor has it that Fidel or other political players plays a role in his death.
Caribe del Sur - Pretty popular right now. From Santiago de Cuba. Plays in the background!
Pitbull - Reggaeton/rap. He is also pretty popular. He lives in Miami.
Celia Cruz - Everybody knows her without knowing it. She has sung many great songs, such as Guantanamera.
Buena Vista Social Club - Some years ago the documentary of the same name was published including many big names. The documentary is very emotional and very beautiful and the music it self it undescribable. Watch it!
Candyman - A local rapper from Santiago de Cuba, that I have met a few times because he is a friend of a friend. He los his record contract because he sings about the real situation in Cuba, but he still performs. During the carnavals this year (2008) in Santiago, he preformed every night and only the very last night he improvised. He is censured, so as he did this the police arrived and forced him off the stage. His music can be hard to find!
Gente D' Zona - Largest and most famous Reggaeton-group from Cuba. They're from Habana (playing in the background!)
Clan 537 - Also famous and also reggaeton (or as they themselves call it Hip Pop).
Los Van Van - A world famouse Salsa band, which tours the world. They generally visit Denmark once a year.
Pupy y Los Que Son Son - Another famouse Salsa band. They also tour the world, so they can be experienced outside Cuba as well.
